My mothers name is Kaley, and she is a resident of Lahaina and it’s community. Tuesday evening, 8/7, she called me stuck in traffic trying to get home as the winds howled. I woke up Wednesday morning with a flood of messages and images showing the town of Lahaina gone, burned from the flames. Confused and heartbroken, I cried. Thankfully, my mothers work friend sheltered her for the night in Kihei, until the ashes settled. As we anxiously waited to hear if her apartment survived, we got the news that her building was gone. I am originally from Oahu, but I spent most of my summers in Lahaina with my mom.
I not only mourn the loss of my mothers home, but that of the town and community. My mom has been through thick and thin, but this was the last thing she ever needed. Everything that she had, clothes, shoes, valuables and her savings, gone. I understand help is needed severely for the people of Maui, but please consider donating or sharing to help her get back on her feet.
