We never think a tragedy will touch us personally. But fate was not with us. My name is Bobi Cuddihy and my brother Sanford Hill lost everything but the clothes on his back and his car in the Lahaina wildfire. Especially hard for him to lose was a lifetime of photography. Sanford is a kama’aina (born and raised in Hawaii). He moved to Maui in 1972, as a 20-year-old, when it was an undiscovered remnant of old Hawaii and before Lahaina became a tourist destination. Sanford is resilient and has the ho’omau (ability to persevere) but at his age it isn’t easy to start all over. He didn’t have much and doesn’t need much.
He was living just on social security and in the senior low-income housing. But the cost of starting over in Hawaii is high. Your kindness, generosity, and Aloha to this GoFundMe campaign will go directly towards providing Sanford with the essentials – a safe shelter, clothing, food, and the means to start anew. Every dollar raised will play a crucial role in making a difference in rebuilding his life.
